Even When You Know Exactly What To Do
You know what needs to be done. It’s not a mystery. It’s not a lack of information.
You don’t need another strategy.
And that’s what makes this so frustrating. Because instead of doing the thing…
You don’t.
The Part No One Talks About
Procrastination doesn’t feel like laziness. It feels like:
Sitting there, knowing exactly what you should be doing. And not doing it. Watching the clock. Avoiding the task. Telling yourself you’ll start in five minutes.
And then… not starting
What You Make It Mean
And this is where it starts to turn on you. Because it’s not just about the task anymore. Now it becomes:
“What is wrong with me?”
“Why can’t I just do this?”
“Other people don’t struggle like this…” (They do, though.)
And underneath that?
Embarrassment and shame.
Because you know what you’re capable of. But your actions don’t show it.
The Procrastination Cycle
This is the cycle you’re very likely stuck in. And there are ways out of this cycle. The challenge is if you’ve been stuck in this cycle for awhile, you’ve probably stopped trusting yourself.
So your brain, trying to be helpful, will remind you of this task, and that task, and the other thing. And don’t forget…. All the things. And that pressure increases your desire to avoid, increases the shame.
And reinforces the belief that you can’t trust yourself to come through.
Why You Keep Procrastinating
This is the part that matters. Because it’s not about discipline or motivation. Your brain simply gets overloaded. Call it decision fatigue, confusion, whatever.
- Too many decisions
- Too many options
- Too many things competing for your attention
So instead of acting, you pause…
And that pause turns into delay…
Or you do something else that feels easier, but isn’t what will move you or your business forward. And it isn’t what you decided you would do. Or committed to doing. But at least you can feel like you did something.
And because it’s not what you promised yourself, it drops you right back into that cycle.
The Gurus Advice Makes Things Worse
This is where it gets misunderstood. Most advice tells you to just push harder. Try again. Be more disciplined. Find an accountability partner. But really, this advice is foundationally about shame. You’ve failed so you just need to try harder.
But that doesn’t work. Because first of all, shame never works. Shame only keeps you stuck. It never moves you out of where you’re stuck.
But also because, the problem isn’t a lack of effort in the first place. It’s how you’re thinking about your time. You’re trying to operate in a way that does not support you.
And when something doesn’t work, AND makes you feel bad about yourself, your brain will resist it. not because it’s broken.
Because it’s trying to protect you.
